Top Cat Friendly Dogs
Imagine the scene where a dog is fiercely chasing a cat. What could be more natural? Of course it’s absolutely normal unless it’s your cat and your dog. In most cases it’s possible to keep both these species of animals in the same household if they are brought up since a young age. Remember though that there are hunting breeds which stand out for extremely strong prey drive and therefore can suddenly attack even the cat which it has known for a while. At the other end of the spectrum, some canine varieties possess so easy-going and kind nature that they easily find common ground with all other pets in the house.
1. Labrador Retriever
This sunny fellow welcomes any chance to frisk and treats cats as good playmates. Its keen mind and excellent trainability make its socialization a breeze so it won’t bother other animal if it’s in no mood for active pastime. The breed is a great choice for multi-animal households with lots of kids.
2. Beagle
In spite of its hunting background, this dog is very affable with familiar cats and bonds to all animals with which it’s raised since its puppyhood. It also needs very primitive grooming and adores kids.
3. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
It’s a very human-oriented breed that is renowned for its highly affectionate and good-natured disposition. Separation issue is a usual problem for its specimens so it will be even better if your pet has one or several feline companions to play with when you are out.
4. Maltese
Miniature size and loving nature are the main reasons of its wide-spread popularity among cat fanciers. It’s ready to frolic with children for hours on end and becomes an outstanding family dog. In general it’s fine with all animals in the household.
5. Bichon Frise
Thanks to its merry and gentle spirit, this dog gets on perfectly well with other pets in the house, including cats. Its grown-up specimen is fairly timid and a bit fearful so it needs time to make friends to a new animal in the family. Be aware though that the housebreaking of this breed poses certain difficulty and its coat needs sizeable amount of maintenance.
6. Chihuahua
This dog which is actually smaller than the vast majority of breeds earned reputation of a great cat lover. In fact it usually prefers to frisk with their feline friends rather than with its counterparts who can accidentally hurt its fragile body in the heat of the game.
7. Boston Terrier
Although terrier-type dogs are usually antagonistic to cats, this little inquisitive chap is a happy exception from this rule. The breed is a very vigorous and easy-going and makes a wonderful addition to multi-animal households.
8. Cocker Spaniel
The dog is famous for its super friendly personality and seems to perceive each and every living creature as a potential playmate. It can be frequently seen stretched out on the couch beside the cat which commonly has nothing against such a company. Due to its non-aggressiveness it’s even possible to introduce this breed to the home with pre-existing feline pets.
Of course the list of cat-friendly breeds can be extended to several dozens of names, but it’s fair to say that the quality of relations between a cat and a dog depends on a number of factors, including their individual propensities, the level of their innate sociability and your training efforts. In essence all canine varieties, which are characterized with heightened intelligence and outgoing temperament, are good with cats after proper mutual socialization.
