Tendency to use such names in a playful manner dates back to the dog breed of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom dorgis (Dachshund/Corgi). Dog breeds with such labels have not ever been recognized as purebreds by any major registry.

However, in 2006 the portmanteau combinations Cockapoo and Labradoodle were already found in some dictionaries.
