Portmanteau hybrid names
With continued popularity of the Cockapoo name used since 1960 and made up by a combination of the two elements two involved dog breeds (Cocker Spaniel / Poodle) it has become so habitual that hybrids began to take labels, invented by portmanteau or verbal contamination (mixing of two words, expressions) .
Here are some examples of popular dog hybrids labels made up in this manner:
Golden Retriever х Labrador = Goldador
Golden Retriever х Poodle = Goldendoodle
Labrador Retriever х (Toy) Poodle = Labradoodle
Maltese х Shih-Tzu = Maltese Shih Tzu
Maltese х Poodle = Maltipoo
Pekingese х Poodle = Peekapoo
Pug х Beagle = Puggle
Miniature Schnauzer and Poodle = Schnoodle
Yorkie x Poodle = Yorkie-Poo
Maltese x Yorkshire Terrier = Morkie
Mastiff x Poodle = Mastidoodle
Maltese x Miniature Schnauzer = Mauzer
Labrador Retriever x Rottweiler = Labrottie
Tendency to use such names in a playful manner dates back to the dog breed of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom dorgis (Dachshund/Corgi). Dog breeds with such labels have not ever been recognized as purebreds by any major registry.
However, in 2006 the portmanteau combinations Cockapoo and Labradoodle were already found in some dictionaries. Fanciful breed names are common in presale ads, or on Web sites, this allow vendors to invent their own names for the progeny of hybrid puppies. However, such terms give freedom of their different interpretation and therefore insipid.
