At last! Dog finds new home after five years in an animal shelter

A dog looking for a new home for the past five years has finally been adopted, all thanks to a campaign on social media. Chester, a six-year-old Pitbull mix, had spent years at two different shelters in the Long Island area but was repeatedly turned down by families looking to adopt a dog. Unwilling to make the dog wait any longer, staff at the North Fork Animal Shelter decided top take drastic action in order to find Chester a new home. A Facebook page entitled ‘Chester Waiting for five years’ was created in order to attract a potential owner. The heart-breaking picture reads: "Why doesn’t anybody want me? Everyone at the shelter tells me what a good boy I am. "So why has no one adopted me? I promise to be good and love my new family. Please maybe you are my new family... I sit and wait for you to come.” The volunteers were shocked to discover how successful their new Facebook campaign had been - nearly 2,000 people had shared the image of Chester from their own accounts. Speaking to the Southold local, the shelter’s manager Gabby Stroup said: “It was by far the most amazing thing I have ever seen — the amount of people who shared and called or emailed was amazing. This was one of the happiest days,” People called from Illinois, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Michigan, Oregon, New Jersey Wisconsin, Nova Scotia, Australia and more — people tearing up as they called.” Despite the worldwide interest in helping Chester, the once lonely pooch is now living happily with a family from the local area.
